I’ve been getting a little greedy lately, I confess. I’d
love a new truck, new horse trailer, a new show horse, bigger house, la la la.
I even began looking at the biggest monthly payment we could afford to get all this stuff. This search
for stuff and the way to attain it began taking up a TON of time!
Proverbs 1: 19 “So
are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; It takes away the life of its
owners.”
Funny
how the Bible is always right. I pulled my head out my phone and realized that
I was at the trailhead of an ugly path. Like my dad says “people get all this
stuff, then they spend their whole lives paying and maintaining it all”. I
think that is what this proverb is teaching on the surface. But in a deeper
sense, your spiritual life will be taken from you. Your heart is filled with
greed, lust and sin hardens your heart. All this for stuff!
So I
took a small step. I deleted all my shopping apps and online bookmarks. Poof! All this
spare time to do things that actually matter, like cleaning (joke, I mostly hate
cleaning). My next step was every day to remind myself of just how incredibly
blessed I am and how what I have is enough. I include it in my prayers and
thoughts.
Next step was a little more extensive- I changed my plans for the future.
STOP!
You mean that I am not following my heart or doing whatever it takes to follow
my dreams or being whatever I want to be no matter the cost?!
Don’t roll over in your grave just yet Walt.
My soul is worth more than any dream, any goal, want or
desire. So if living in Christ and inheriting eternal life means that I give up
some stuff, I’m happy to do so.
Be Content.
Remember,
Gods got it.
Yes Hannah, He has shown you some. Here's some he shared with me a while back--come from the first 10 verses of Proverbs 22. These are goals I wish all young Christians had.
ReplyDelete1 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
and favor is better than silver or gold.
2 The rich and the poor meet together;
the Lord is the maker of them all.
3 The prudent sees danger and hides himself,
but the simple go on and suffer for it.
4 The reward for humility and fear of the Lord
is riches and honor and life.
5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the crooked;
whoever guards his soul will keep far from them.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go;
even when he is old he will not depart from it.
7 The rich rules over the poor,
and the borrower is the slave of the lender.
8 Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity,
and the rod of his fury will fail.
9 Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed,
for he shares his bread with the poor.
10 Drive out a scoffer, and strife will go out,
and quarreling and abuse will cease.
